The Barenaked Ladies — Stephen, Ed, Jim, Tyler and Kevin — are undisputed Canadian icons, with their fun, bouncy, acoustic rock and cute lyricising cementing them as CanCon radio darlings and generation gap appealing artists. So why the hell are they getting second billing in a 500-seat club?
On Wednesday July 7, Barenaked Ladies will be joining a Dutch art pop band called The Nits at Toronto’s Mod Club as their "very special guests." That’s right. Pay to see The Nits, come early to catch BNL.
The Nits have been together for the last 30 years, mixing a British Invasion sound with a new wave, XTC, Talking Heads influence. There’s also a distinct synthy Kraftwerk sound to The Nits’ music, which garnered the band a cult following after they were signed to the Dutch arm of CBS in late ’78 after their independent self-titled debut LP was released. The arty 1980 album New Flat expanded The Nits beyond their native country but it wasn’t until a series of lineup changes and experimental forays into electronic and classical music that The Nits had a North American release with their1994 album dA dA dA.
Although The Nits have been through the Great White North before, The Barenaked Ladies claim that the cult band have never played Toronto — a travesty that simply had to be rectified.
Though on paper it looks a little bit like a Barenaked Ladies joke of some sort, with the mysterious Netherlands pop prodigies taking top billing at the Mod Club, while Stephen and Ed’s songs about Yoko Ono and Brian Wilson will serve to warm up the intimate crowd.
The Nits will be performing at the following Canadian cities:
·  July 7, Toronto, ON @ The Mod Club (with the Barenaked Ladies)
·  July 9, Winnipeg, MB @ Folk Festival
·  July 10, Winnipeg, MB @ Folk Festival
·  July 12, Quebec City, QC @ Quebec City Summer Festival
·  July 14, Quebec City, QC @ Quebec City Summer Festival

Canadian rock icons the Barenaked Ladies are playing second fiddle to a band from across the sea. The Barenaked Ladies will open up for Dutch artists The Nits when the band plays the Mod Club.
The Nits have been playing music for 30 years but little was known of the band outside their native Netherlands until 1980. North America didn't catch wind of The Nits until 1994.
The Nits will be playing a couple of festival shows besides the Toronto gig when they come to Canada in July.
July 7 Toronto – Mod Club
July 9 & 10 Winnipeg – Folk Festival
