Questions to Rob

Hans Mulders tries to find out:

Imagine: You were forced to stay on an completely deserted island in the
pacific for two months. What are the 10 albums you would you take with you

(Dear Hans, You try to find out what's my favourite music. You will not succeed in this, because it varies from day to day. Would I be on a sunny island for two months, I'd try to clear my head, so I'd have a fresh ear when returning to the civilized world)

What cd/lp do you listen to the most now?

Je tweede vraag kan ik wel beantwoorden: Op weg naar optredens hoor ik veel Fat Boy Slim, Moby (morgen naar het concert) en Emmylou Harris. Groet ROB

(this question I can answer: in the car driving to our concerts I hear a lot of Fat Boy Slim, Moby (I'll go and see tomorrow's concert) and Emmylou Harris)

Do you consider yourself more a percussionist or a drummer?

I try to play asd colourfull as possible, consider less to be more. So best
fo both worlds.

I assume Henk delivers demo recordings of his songs, how do you go about
writing drum parts for his melodies?

When I hear a Henkdemo for the first time, I concentrate on the atmosphere,
the feel. I listen carefully to the melody and the rhythm of Henk's
singing. That's a start, then I play what first comes to mind. After that
it's mostly a matter of improvisation for me until the song has it's final
structure, which is a very delicate process. It means being very aware of
what the rest of the band is playing and adjusting dynamics, colour, the
form of different parts while still trying to surprise the rest to inspire
them to find things.

Do you or did you ever write melodic parts or lyrics for a Nits song?

No.

How do you find the changes in the band line-up from the earliest days up to
now?

Every line-up has it's own specific qualities, so that changes all the
time, which adds to the liveliness of the whole thing.

What's your favorite Nits song and your favorite non-Nits song?

This changes by the day , sometimes by the hour. Maybe we'll meet at the
Nits day in Utrecht, then we'll talk about it.

Do you ever get on the internet to look at Nits websites?

I like to know what's going on there, so every once in a while I take a
look, and I'm always surprised about how much people seem to know about us.
And ofcourse it's also hartwarming to see that they take so much interest
in NITS.

The band consist now of more women than men, how different is this?

Mixed teams feel more balanced. The biggest change is of course the sound of
the vocals, so it's more a musical difference than anything else.
